Brookie Joe’s Quick Pics

Brookie Joe Fontinalis fished the headwaters of Marsh Creek/Cryder Creek near home and caught a few small friends with a nymph.

Rock Creek (NY)

The Mays were hatching down on Slate Run (PA).

Slate Run Dale makes a nice cast with a feathered hook.

Brookie Joe’s SR brownie.

The run was looking fine a week ago…

Brookie Joe met the family gang down at Catoctin Nat’l Park in MD where, alas, he plans to fish Big Hunting Creek before the week is out…

The bloodroot flower (short-lived but beautiful) starred the park grounds.

The black rat snake posed amicably for a few photos…

Arrived in central VA to find the trout streams blown-out by heavy rain… Beautiful weather looms, and hopefully Brookie Joe will re-connect….

The blue hepatica (Catoctin Mtns.) is a favorite spring wildflower…

Brookie Joe’s Slate Run brownie took a nymph then said farewell…

About rivertoprambles

Welcome to Rivertop Rambles. This is my blog about the headwaters country-far afield or close to home. I've been a fly-fisher, birder, and naturalist for most of my adult life. I've also written poetry and natural history books for thirty years. In Rambles I will mostly reflect on the backcountry of my Allegheny foothills in the northern tier of Pennsylvania and the southern tier of New York State. Sometimes I'll write about the wilderness in distant states, or of the wild places in the human soul. Other times I'll just reflect on the domestic life outdoors. In any case, I hope you enjoy. Let's ramble!

Heading down Georgia way to fish the Chattooga & Toccoa this week. Then heading to VA to see my son and will probably get a chance to wet a line there too. Was in Key West for my daughters wedding couple of weeks ago and got to torment a couple of resident tarpon too. End of report… Tell Brookie Joe nice fish and pictures. Thanks for the updates.

    • Georgia brookies, Key West daughter wedding (with tarpon torment), VA to see your son (to drop a line if the streams have settled down)– that all sounds great, Kinderhook Bob. I’ll tell Brookie Joe, who thanks you for writing!

Hi Walt after you left that day I landed a nice brownie in the spot I said there’s got to be a fish there!

Brookie Joe seems to have had a fine time out there! He’s good with a camera…

Lovely pics all, Walt. Still waiting for the wildflowers to make their appearance in earnest here, skunk cabbage, trout lily and some violets working at it. Fished the project water on the Allegheny above Coudersport for the first time ever last week, and I was able to connect with a number of fish, the best being a good 17″ brown. Also…it may not be the Bowery in 1976, it may not be CBGB with Hilly Kristal behind the bar, but I’m going to see Television in Pixburgh in a couple weeks!

    • Whoa, are you kidding me? Watching Television in PA? I didn’t even know Verlaine was still playing it. Awesome. Let me know how that goes… Meanwhile, Brent & I will catch Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets on Monday night. Early Floyd music & lights should be fine… I’m glad you caught the upper Allegheny trout scene this spring. It can be lots of fun, for a change of pace. Lookin’ forward to crossing tracks with you later on.

Brookie Joe seems like a fun new character to take on your travels. Who else could land trout in three (soon to be four) different states in barely a week’s time?

Is the third-to-last picture from the third crossing of the Moorman’s?

    • Close, but actually Brookie Joe dead-ended there at the First Crossing. It was that high. He could’ve climbed the ridge to go around those crossings, but felt it would be better to try again another time.

Is that Mayfly pic a Slate Run Quill Gordon Walt? Great picture Walt! Is that ‘Dale’ – from SRS? Nice flower pics and of the Mayfly and of course, the Brown trout! Things are getting a bit ‘testy’ around here. The foot/ankle should be 100% in a few more weeks I’m hoping!

    • I believe it was a Quill, Marion, and yeah, that’s Dale H. casting at the Mowry Pool. It was a nice afternoon. I hope your foot is treating you well and allowing you to get outside some. Thank you for the kind words!

    Walt
That stream in Virginia is breathtaking; have you fished it before? Gorgeous brown—thanks for sharing
