Water That Binds

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe night rain spreads across the sand and binds the billions of particles for a light impression of foot and claw.

The kit fox emerges, and the jack rabbit, and the great horned owl. The darkling beetle wakes with the dawn. The sun calls a black-throated sparrow. The bleached lizard runs from an approaching foot, Nike imprint in the sand.

Leaves of cottonwood track the surface from a wind-tossed limb. The primrose petals radiate; the jack rabbit and coyote run. Water binds the gypsum desert only inches from the surface.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe White Sands encompass 275 square miles. The Sands form an oasis in a chalk dry Chihuahuan Desert bowl.

Sure, it’s a long way to the trout streams, but wait… As water binds the particles of gypsum, water urges every dune’s crest into motion, blowing on the wind toward the places we know and love.

As the wilderness moves, the white dunes invite: movies have been filmed here; Pink Floyd played a concert on the ’90s sand.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Imagine night-walking with a full moon overhead, the starkness and the hazard now soft and beautiful…

About rivertoprambles

Welcome to Rivertop Rambles. This is my blog about the headwaters country-far afield or close to home. I've been a fly-fisher, birder, and naturalist for most of my adult life. I've also written poetry and natural history books for thirty years. In Rambles I will mostly reflect on the backcountry of my Allegheny foothills in the northern tier of Pennsylvania and the southern tier of New York State. Sometimes I'll write about the wilderness in distant states, or of the wild places in the human soul. Other times I'll just reflect on the domestic life outdoors. In any case, I hope you enjoy. Let's ramble!

  2. Junior says:

Two of the pictures in particular are incredible. 1) The lizard seems to be a particularly fortuitous find. 2) The image of the tree might be one of my favorites.

  3. Long says:

    Very cool and beautiful scenery!

  4. Joseph Hord says:

Those pictures make me want to visit the desert and spend some time exploring!
